Bob Ridgely Receives the Eisenmann Medal

Linnaean Society of New York

Annual Dinner 2001
Liederkranz Club
New York City

Jocotoco Antpitta, Grallaria ridgleyi

At the Linnaean Society of New York's annual dinner, held on March 13, 2001, Robert S. Ridgely was awarded the Society's Eisenmann Medal, named in honor of the brilliant lawyer-ornithologist Eugene Eisenmann, a past President of the Society. Bob presented a multi-media show about his discovery of the Jocotoco Antpitta Grallaria ridgelyi and the significant accomplishments of Fundación Jocotoco, which preserves critical habitat for rare birds in Ecuador by purchasing land for private nature reserves. Highlights included a tape of the Antpitta's prolonged, rising series of hoots, for which local residents named it "jocotoco", and a photo by Doug Wechsler of Project Vireo of a bird that was netted and photographed under natural conditions in a field enclosure. Paul Greenfield's painting of the bird will be on the dust jacket of volume 2 of the Birds of Ecuador.
