Thane K. Pratt & Bruce M. Beehler. Birds of New Guinea - Second Edition. Princeton University Press (October 2014). Details. The greatest improvement I've ever seen in a field guide authored by the same people responsible for the first edition, reflecting all that has been learned since the first edition came out. Birding in New Guinea is much more difficult than birding in Southeast Asia and vastly more difficult than birding in Central and South America. With this great field guide and available sound recordings, you have the best chance ever to identify the birds that you may glimpse as they take cover at the approach of people. (On treks in West Irian in 1988, our porters hunted and ate songbirds as small as robins by throwing rocks with the accuracy of a major league pitcher.) In March 2016, Princeton published a new handbook of the Birds of New Guinea by Beehler & Pratt, which is available in a Kindle edition. Thus birders can easily take the heavy reference book along on trips in the field. Kindle: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Princeton University Press: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
David Allen Sibley. The Sibley Guide to Birds - Second Edition. Knopf & Helm (March 2014). Overall, the best available field guide to North American birds, if you avoid the defective first printing. I prefer the National Geographic guide in some respects, including portability, but even the improved sixth edition contains color plates that ought to be repainted. Steve Howell is in the early stages of work on a North American field guide that he hopes will be comparable to the superb Collins Guide to the Birds of Europe, the world's best bird field guide. Details. Helm: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Knopf: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Miles McMullan & Lelis Navarrete. Fieldbook of the Birds of Ecuador. Fundación Jocotoco 2013. Out of print, but available online at Bookread - must disable Adblock Plus on the page & register with Playster. You can read it for 30 days free, after which you have to pay $10/month! Unclear whether it can be downloaded for use after the 30 days expire. The only copies in American libraries listed in Worldcat are at Columbia U. & Stanford U., if you have access. Neither participates in Inter-Library Loan. US | UK
Graham Pizzey & Frank Knight. The Field Guide to the Birds of Australia. Edited by Sarah Pizzey. HarperCollins, 9th edition 2013. 624 pages. [The first two editions refer to a completely different book, Pizzey & Doyle 1980 & 1991 (Pizzey I), which had much more detailed texts but mediocre illustrations by Doyle. The third edition actually was the first edition of Pizzey & Knight (Pizzey II), published in 1997, while the fourth, fifth and sixth editions were reprintings of Pizzey II with corrections.] The seventh edition constituted the first substantial revision to Pizzey II, with 26 revised color plates, nearly 500 revised range maps, and numerous changes to the text. A digital edition is available in Windows, Android, and Apple versions, but it is not cross-platform, and it forces you to accept 2-device only licensing, which is absurd in 2016. I have a Windows desktop computer, a chromebook, an iPad, and an Android smartphone. I should only have to pay once for a digital version that will work on all platforms, like pdf or Kindle ebooks!  US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Steve N.G. Howell. Petrels, Albatrosses & Storm-Petrels of North America - A Photographic Guide. Details. Princeton University Press 2012. xxiii + 483 pages, 975 photos and figures, 66 maps. Book: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Kindle: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

This is the finest identification guide to pelagic birds published to date. For the first time, everything you need to prepare for tubenose ID on both east and west coast pelagic trips is accessible in one volume. It's also an authoritative and well-written text on tubenose biology. The book is extremely well-organized to help the user zero in on critical marks. Thus, for example, the section on Pacific gadfly petrels is introduced by five pages of photos and accompanying text showing and comparing the 10 species most likely to be encountered. Following are subsections on each species with comparative photos, including species not yet recorded but which may occur. For Cook's Petrel, there five pages of photos, with comparative shots of De Filippi's Petrel, Black-winged Petrel, and Pycroft's Petrel. Without question, a 2012 WorldTwitch Best Bird Book award winner.

Large paper edition (Struik 2014): US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Jon L. Dunn & Jonathan Alderfer. National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America - Sixth Edition. National Geographic Society (November 2011). A great leap forward over the fifth edition and still the book I carry in the field, although Sibley has better illustrations of some difficult plumages and more consistent illustrations overall. Both the top North America guides still lag behind the superb Collins Guide to the birds of Europe. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Richard Crossley. The Crossley ID Guide - Eastern Birds. Princeton University Press 2011. Details. 544 pages, 10,000+ color photos. The Crossley guide is a valuable resource and a bargain considering the number and quality of the photos. However, the fake photos of birds plugged into habitat backgrounds only diminish the attractiveness and utility of the book. Natural photos would have been a much better choice. Thomas S. Schulenberg, Douglas F. Stotz, Daniel F. Lane, John P. O'Neill & Theodore A. Parker III. Birds of Peru. Superb field guide that crams a tremendous amount of useful information into 656 pages. For best results, scan your heavy, more comprehensive books and carry your entire library to Peru in a 10" tablet. Princeton University Press, October 2007. Reprinted with updates and corrections 2010. Details. Book: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Kindle: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Collins Bird Guide (Birds of Europe) - Second Edition. HarperCollins & Princeton University Press. Second edition, 2010. [Online index] The work of both artists, Killian Mullarney and Dan Zetterström, is equally impressive, and great care has been taken to present a vast amount of material in a compact field guide. I consider this to be the world's finest field guide. Details. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP

Princeton University Press: US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
Ken Simpson & Nicolas Day. Field Guide to the Birds of Australia. Penguin Books Australia & Princeton University Press. 8th edition 2010. Details. WorldTwitch 2004 Best Bird Book - Australasia (7th edition). 392 pages. 132 color plates including 16 new or revised plates. Revised distribution maps with all subspecies shown. The field guide for those with a large pocket. This book is smaller, lighter and more portable than the large format guides by Morcombe and Pizzey & Knight, but the plates are much better than Slater's. In the 7th edition, the Handbook section at the end was condensed by more than 50 pages, saving additional weight without loss of field utility. US | UK | FR | DE | CA | JP
