Craig
Robson. Birds of Thailand. 272 pages. New Holland &
Princeton University Press 2002.
WorldTwitch 2002 Best Bird Book - Asia. Illustrations
and abbreviated text from Robson's Guide to the Birds of
Southeast Asia. Much easier to use in Thailand than the more
comprehensive book and more up-to-date than Boonsong & Round.
However, it is very difficult to match the illustrations with
the facing text, as the bird numbers are buried in the text and
not even highlighted. Morcombe separators, as used by Sinclair,
and bolded bird numbers would have made this guide much more
user-friendly. (Perhaps they might be added in a second
printing?)

color plates. Space well utilized to provide essential
identification details.

Butterflies of Europe. (UK title: Collins Field Guide to the
Butterflies of Britain and Europe.) There still is no butterfly
field guide for Europe comparable to
Jeff Glassberg's North American butterfly guides. Butterfly
guides illustrated with field (not pinned) photos are
almost always superior to guides illustrated by artists, in
contrast to bird guides. This rather mediocre guide illustrated
by paintings is the best now in print, although the prior
Collins guide by Higgins & Riley may actually be more useful in
the field. 320 pages. 104 color plates. HarperCollins 1997 and
Princeton University Press 2001.

| Birds of Europe. (Collins Field Guide).
HarperCollins & Princeton University Press, 1999. [Online
index] The work of both artists, Killian Mullarney and Dan
Zetterström, is equally impressive, and great care has been
taken to present a vast amount of material in a compact field
guide. I consider this to be the world's finest field guide.
