Ber
van Perlo. Birds of Mexico and Central America. The color
plates in this illustrated checklist are excellent and at least
comparable in quality to the illustrations in Perlo's Birds
of Western Africa. This small paperback can be carried at
times and in places where birders might leave behind the
detailed but heavier guides by Howell & Webb, Stiles and
Ridgely. It's also a very convenient study guide and includes
illustrations of migrants and hypothetical species. (2006). 336
pages. 98 color plates illustrating more than 1,500 species.

Ken
Simpson & Nicolas Day. Field Guide to the Birds of Australia.
Penguin Books Australia, Princeton University Press & Helm. 7th
edition 2004.
WorldTwitch 2004 Best Bird Book - Australasia. 392
pages. 132 color plates including 16 new or revised plates.
Revised distribution maps with all subspecies shown. The field
guide for those with a large pocket. This book is smaller,
lighter and more portable than the large format guides by
Morcombe and Pizzey & Knight, but the plates are much better
than Slater's. In the 7th edition, the Handbook section at the
end has been condensed by more than 50 pages, saving additional
weight without loss of field utility.

| Ian Sinclair &
Pete Ryan. Assisted by Patrice Christy & Phil Hockey. Birds
of Africa South of the Sahara: A complete illustrated field
guide to the birds south of the Sahara. Illustrated by
Norman Arlott, Peter Hayman & Alan Harris. Struik & Princeton
University Press 2003.
Details. 760 pages. Covers 2105 species with more than 2000
images on 359 plates. The illustrations of southern birds are
borrowed from the latest SASOL guide.
WorldTwitch 2003 Best Bird Book - Africa. For home
study, it provides instant access to all African species, with
acceptable to excellent color plates, range maps, and essential
text. In the field, it fills in the many gaps between the
regions with fine modern field guides. Recommended by Jon
Hornbuckle for use in Zambia.

of Northern India. Helm & Princeton University Press 2003.
WorldTwitch 2003 Best Bird Book - Asia. Regional

field than the larger book, with enlarged color illustrations.

| Herbert Raffaele, James Wiley, Orlando
Garrido, Allan Keith & Janis Raffaele. Birds of the West
Indies. 216 pages, 94 color plates. Reduced and rearranged
field guide largely extracted from the authors' larger 1998
guide, with many new and improved illustrations. Repeats the
mistaken claim that both tremblers on St. Lucia and Martinique.
(See Storer 1989). I also question the continuing claim that
Bridled Quail-Dove and Key West Quail-Dove both occur
sympatrically on Puerto Rico.
