Rajah's Scops-Owl Montane primary forest in northern Sarawak on Gunung Mulu and Gunung Dulit. Rare protected resident, endemic to Borneo. [Also on Java & Sumatra]
Barred Eagle-Owl Middle and upper storeys of lowland and montane primary and secondary forest, particularly near streams Recorded in Semengoh Forest Reserve, at Niah caves, Gunung Dulit, in Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, in the Kelabit Highlands and in Kuching. Uncommon protected resident. Lowland wetlands, cultivation and mangroves and also in the Kelabit Highlands. Recorded in Lingga area, in Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary and at Semengoh. Observed near Sri Aman in March 1996. Uncommon protected resident.

Dulit Frogmouth Lower and middle storeys of montane primary forest in northern and central Sarawak. Recorded on Gunung Dulit, in the Kelabit Highlands and on the Usun Apau. Endangered endemic resident. [Apparently not observed by a living ornithologist. Is there any undisturbed forest left within its known range?]

Black Partridge Lowland species found in primary forest and also in the Kelabit Highlands. Recorded in Gunung Mulu National Park and in Semengoh Forest Reserve. A protected and uncommon resident.

Bulwer's Pheasant Montane species frequenting primary forest including on Gunung Mulu, the Usun Apau, in the Kelabit Highlands and in Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary. A totally protected and endangered resident, endemic to Borneo.
Bornean Peacock-Pheasant Inhabits lowland forest up to 1100 metres. Recorded in the upper Rajang area in 1877, and a recent report from that area indicates that the species may still be present. [Details?] A totally protected and endangered resident, endemic to Borneo. [Apparently not observed by a living ornithologist. Probably near extinction with the almost complete elimination of primary forest within its known range.]
White-shouldered Ibis Freshwater wetlands and primary forest in the lowlands. Recorded in Kuching in 1946, but no recent records. Endangered protected vagrant. Lowland peat swamp forest and grassy freshwater swamps in the north of Sarawak. Recorded at Bintulu in August 1964, Kuching in September 1964, Niah National Park in October 1974, and in Gunung Mulu National Park in November 1974 and in 1976. Endangered, totally protected, nomadic resident.
Lesser Adjutant Lowland wetlands, coastal mudflats and open grassland. Nesting was reported at Sambir and Moyan in 1960, but birds no longer frequent this area. On Pulau Bruit, 40 recorded in October 1985 and 11 in April 1986. There was evidence of breeding until 1985, but no subsequent records. Endangered, totally protected, resident.
Bornean Ground-Cuckoo Very large ground dweller in lowland primary forest. Recorded in Gunung Mulu National Park. Endangered resident. [Endemic. Split from the little-known Sumatran Ground-Cuckoo, C. viridis. See Forktail issue with Carpococcyx on the cover and David Bishop's report about seeing and taping the species at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Sabah.]

Blue-headed Pitta Lowland primary forest in the north of Sarawak. Recorded in Gunung Mulu National Park in 1976 and in May 1980 (a nest with three eggs) and in Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary. Endemic to Borneo. Uncommon resident.

Tawny-breasted Parrotfinch Middle storey of montane primary forest with bamboo in the north of Sarawak. Recorded on Gunung Mulu. Rare resident. [I saw this species in degraded & partially burned roadside bamboo on Luzon.]
Pin-tailed Parrotfinch Lower storey of montane and lowland primary forest: feeds seasonally in padi fields, regularly in the Kelabit Highlands. Locally common resident. Lowland and sub-montane long grassland and secondary scrub, peat swamp forest and mangroves. Also occurs in the Kelabit Highlands. Abundant resident, endemic to Borneo.
Whitehead's Spiderhunter Upper storey of montane primary forest in the north of Sarawak. Recorded on Gunung Mulu, Gunung Murud, Gunung Dulit, in the Kelabit Highlands and on the Usun Apau. Uncommon resident, endemic to Borneo.
Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker Middle and upper storeys of lowland and sub-montane primary and secondary forest; peat swamp forest and rural orchards and plantations. Observed up to 1000 metres on Gunung Penrissen, to 760 metres on Gunung Serapi, at sea level at Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary and Samarahan, and in the Kelabit Highlands. Uncommon resident, endemic to Borneo.
Black-sided Flowerpecker Upper storey of montane primary forest in the north of Sarawak. Recorded along the dividing range including Gunung Mulu and Gunung Dulit, but not on Gunung Penrissen or Gunung Pueh. Uncommon resident, endemic to Borneo.
Crimson-breasted Flowerpecker Upper storey of lowland primary, secondary and peat swamp forest in the south of Sarawak. Observed in Kubah National Park at 600 metres and at Samunsam Wildlife Sanctuary at sea level. Rare resident.
Brown-backed Flowerpecker Middle and upper storeys of lowland primary and secondary forest and plantations. Observed below 500 metres in Kubah National Park. Also recorded in the Kelabit Highlands, in Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, and on lower slopes of Gunung Dulit. Rare resident.
Plain Flowerpecker Lower and middle storeys of montane and sub-montane secondary forest and rural areas. Recorded in Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary. Observed at 1100 metres in the Kelabit Highlands. Uncommon resident.
Plain Sunbird Middle storey of lowland and sub-montane primary and secondary forest, peat swamp forest, and on coastal islands. Common resident.
Red-throated Sunbird Middle and upper storeys of lowland primary forest. Recorded in Lanjak Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary, and in casuarinas in Bako National Park and in Daro District. Observed along Batang Skrang. Uncommon resident. [The Blue-wattled Bulbul, Pycnonotus nieuwenhuisi, is not on the Sarawak list, but as it was rediscovered in the early 1990s at the Kuala Belalong Field Studies Centre in Brunei (and is otherwise known from one old specimen from East Kalimantan), it may occur in Sarawak.] |
